And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything.
- Ephesians 5:21-33
I have a long history of struggling with servanthood. I never wanted to be a servant. It sounded so hard and difficult to me because I was trapped in selfishness. But God has used marriage and motherhood to teach me what servanthood and submission looks like and that following His commands brings me greater joy than striving for selfish ambition.
Growing up, I had the desire to be married one day but I didn't put the work and effort in as a child that would prepare me for it. I shirked chores, ignored against my parents' requests, and rebelled in my heart when they asked me to pull my weight around the house. This, of course, carried into my marriage and was a cause of some strife our first year of marriage. There were days Zach would do all the work and I would do nothing. After some discussions with Zach about these habits, I realized that in my selfishness I had hurt him and that I needed to make some changes.
I thought about things I could do around the house that would surprise him when he got home. I started with cleaning the bathroom. Then it turned into cleaning the bedroom. Before I knew it, I was joyfully cleaning the entire house, anticipating Zach's excitement when he got home. And sure enough, he was excited! And to my surprise, it pleased me to serve him that way.
There have been many other instances like this one where God has showed me the joys of servanthood. He continues to reveal to me new and exciting ways to serve Zach (I made a surprise dinner date at home on Valentine's day for him and I really enjoyed it!). It's not a task and I don't dread it anymore.
Jesus has taught me so much about loving and serving others this last year-and-a-half of marriage and 8 months of motherhood. I'm excited for the journey ahead and His promise to continue to grow and change me into the woman He wants me to be.
